Summary:
Owners Dan and Tina Smith started planting muscadine vines in 2001. But it soon became obvious that their new passion was larger than just farming, so they started bottling and uncorked their first bottle in June of 2005.
Successful in many other businesses, they've brought winning spirit to the Sandhills of North Carolina.
With General Manager Jim McClanathan, they obviously have yet again created a winner. You'll find some of the most unique and fresh flavors available with a muscadine wine.
They bottle two non-muscadine wines, a Chardonnay and a Syrah. They have 10 more wines, all derived from locally grown muscadine grapes. These muscadine cultivars include -- Carlos, Noble, Magnolia, Doreen and Triumph vines.
The Riverton is a good example of the variety they create in flavor. Crisp, dry, with a lemony citrus zest, it's as crisp as their chardonnay. An unusual taste from a muscadine. |

Features:
Like many old family farms, the land was originally settled by Scottish immigrants. The vineyards are located on a farm that has been in Dan Smith's family since 1807. This is cotton land down here, a crop that is quickly dropping in value.
The Smiths started with just a vineyard, but later decided to bottle and open a tasting room. The tasting room and gift shop are beautifully decorated in wood paneling. You can see the fermenting and storage room through windows behind the tasting room.
Or take a glass outside onto the patio. There's a nice seating area, or you can wander across the parking area to the pond.
I was very surprised by the variety of flavor in their wines even though most of them are from muscadines. The Riverton Reserve is their dryest wine, with a zesty lemon flavor and medium tannins.
The Livingston has a powerful fruity aroma. It's surprising when you taste it and find it dry and refreshing, not the overhwelming muscadine sweetness you would think the scent would bring.
My favorites are the Catherine, a semi-sweet white wine, and Daniel, which reminds me of a German eiswien.
They have regular events at the winery like their Jazzy Fridays at the Winery!. Or plan your wedding outside at the arbor on the pond.

Activities:
The winery is the only one for quite a distance. But with area attractions like the state park on the Lumber River, the famous Pinehurst Golf Resort just up the road, and the Carolina Horse Park the winery makes a nice addition to a weekend afternoon.
The winery sponsors regular events. Check their calendar or our festivals page for more information.
While my photos are winter shots, the area is beautiful in Spring and Summer and a great place for special events like weddings. |
