Summary: It's easy to see traces of the Highland Scots that settled this area in
1739 via the Cape Fear River. In fact, getting here I passed through Scotland County.
This area became an early hub of trade because of the Cape Fear River, which served as an inland port. In 1783, two early settlements, Campbellton and Cross Creek, combined to become Fayetteville, named after the French war hero Marquis de Lafayette.
This area has a long and full history that takes it through the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and stands as a peacekeeper today through the efforts of the army special operations soldiers that come here for training and preparation to deploy worldwide in one of the myriad peace keeping operations that have given the Green Berets their famous reputation.
But lets not forget the Air Force, just next door. Their large cargo aircraft care men and supplies worldwide on a variety of missions.
There is a variety of other industries and agricultural activities here, but many are changing as the historical textile industries head to China and tobacco to the historical museums.

History: Dozens of U.S. cities and counties have been named after the Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette, but Fayetteville was the first and, it is told, the only one he actually visited. The Frenchman arrived in Fayetteville by horse-drawn carriage in 1825 and was welcomed by the residents.

Activities:
Visit downtown Fayetteville. The Market, Special Forces Museum, the Botanical Gardens, and Poe House. There are some nice small shops along Hay St.
Fayetteville is a true military town with both the Army's Fort Bragg and the Air Force Pope Air Force Base here. Pope is officially closing, but many of the planes will be reassigned to Ft Bragg and there's an expected net gain of 20,000 people to Ft. Bragg due to other Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) activities. |
Shopping:
Fayetteville is an interesting place. While their are regular malls like
Cross Creek Mall, many businesses are located in houses down mixed residential streets.
Another interesting area is located near the market, where you can find antique and unique gifts while viewing relics of early American history.

Most locals take the business I-95 loop into town. Hwy 24 will take you down near the Market, a historic site and near city office buildings.
Coming from the west or northwest, you'll probably come in Hwy 401, which comes in from the west and then takes a left turn and heads north towards Sanford. |
