Summary:
Mounty Airy was made famous by the Andy Griffith show as the model for Mayberry RFD. Those names are obvoiusly similar, as are the names used for the town of Mount Pilot - Pilot Mountain.
Mount Airy is the largest town in Surry County. Walk down Main St. and it certainly has a feel that will remind you of the small town featured in the show, but it's also grown along with the rest of the state. You'll see a modern health food store just a few doors down from Barney's Cafe, attorney's offices mixed with businesses designed to take advantage of its fame.
The most timeless part of the town is the granite quarry and the buildings made from this gray rock. Mount Airy is
home to the world's largest open face granite quarry, samples of which are easy to find around town.
Mounty Airy is also a gateway to Virginia and
the Blue Ridge Parkway. You'll see quite a few North Carolinians driving past town on the way to Virginia to purchase lottery tickets as they await the start of their own state lottery.

History:
Mount Airy was incorporated in 1885. This small town on the Virgina border is proud of it's warm, small town feel.
In 1995 they were listed as one of the 100 Best Small Towns in America.
The tourist industry is centered around Main St. where you'll find several shops named for Mayberry points of interest. Strolling the sidewalks is a wonderful way to spend a few hours and there are seveal small garden areas that make pleasant stopovers. I looked in a couple of shops at Mayberry memoribilia, but found their costs a bit extravagant.
While there don't forget to stop by the
Mount Airy Museum of Regional History. You'll find lots of information on the area, as well as a couple of very cool fire engines.
Mount Airy is also home to the world's largest open pit granite quarry situated on top of the official state rock. A formal gray, you'll see several buildings around town made from the local rock, including the Post Office and a bank. Head east of town on Pine St and you'll see a small sign advertising the
North Carolina Granite Corporation. This is Quarry Rd. Take a left and drive past the beautiful
Flat Rock Presbyterian Church. Just past the offices there's a stop sign. Before the stop sign you'll see a sign pointing left to the observation area. This is a chance to see the large granite rock and operations there to cut and haul this rock.
Mayberry RFD.
Andy Samuel Griffith was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina on June 1, 1926, to Carl and Geneva Griffith. his famous show ran from
1965 to 1970. As you walk down Main St in Mayberry, er Mount Airy, you can see shops that have sprung up in tribute to the show. His home is also on the local Chamber map, but I couldn't find street or directional signs and never found it. |

Notes:
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of
Donald Knotts, aka Deputy Barney Fife. Watching his life, and hearing his words, I just hope I live my life half as fully.
